GPS/Navigation For Mariners, In-Person Boating Safety Course
DATELINE – The Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 99, Cape Haze is offering a GPS For Mariners, in-person boating safety course, on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
The 8-hour class will be held at the South Gulf Cove HOA pavilion, 14859 Ingraham Blvd., Port Charlotte, starting at 9 am and finishing at approximately 5 pm. The in-person class is limited in size.
The course is taught by members who patrol and are very familiar with south Charlotte Harbor, Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, South Gulf Cove and Boca Grande areas.
The course is divided into two sessions. The first teaches the skills to read a nautical chart, determine depth of water, location, buoys and marker day and night identification, speed-distance-bearing. The second the skills to understand and use GPS equipment to determine your location, and as an aid to navigate to and from desired destinations. Participants will learn the concept of using and storing waypoints, routes and tracks in GPS equipment as a valuable tool to assist navigation for trip planning and execution.
Masks and social distancing required for this class.
Cost for the class is:
$45 per person
$60 per couple sharing workbook
$15 per middle or high school student
